Santal or kherwal are the aupreme sects of the world. Pilchu Haram and Pilchu Budhi are their forefather. They were born with the blessing of Lita Godet to Hans-hansli birds on a tree on the middle of a sea, when there was no existence of human beings. We santals are the forerunner of pilchu haram and pilchu budhi.
Santals are the main sects by caste. Pilchu Budhi gave the twelve titles to her offsprings. They were named, Murmu, Hansda, Hembram, Tudu, Besra, Soren, Kisku, Baskey, Mardi, Chare etc. They are not allowed to marry within their same title, it is beyond the rules of santals. .
Santals have separate worship place. It is called Jaher Than, where god Marang Buru and Jaher Aayo, More ko turui ko were worshiped during Baha festival. They are called Disom Bonga. On tge worship day Gods and Godesses come down to the Jaher Than, through Gossayen thread to participate for observing the people who are worshiping them. They bless the village people who gathers in the Jaher Than.
Kherwals have the religious faith, culture-customs, deities etc. They invite their relatives to their home in any special function and welcome them by putting a pot of water, and offer regards by doing Johar, which is bowing their head and shaking hands, then they offer Biri or Tobacco to the males. All the guests are offered tamarind color cloth to wear on the occasion of marriage ceremony.
When any new memeber is born in a family, they are named after their forefathers. Santals have their forefathers as their gods and they worship them in their main house.
When any member of the Kherwal family dies. The died body is either burnt or burried and the bones are emersed on the flowing waters of the ganga.
Kherwals have a very unique and creative culture. Which should not be forgotten, and the youngsters should keep in mind that they continue these customs and respect their culture.
